As if we need further evidence that the collector-car market is chest-deep in insanity:

Per CNN, a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! recently sold a 23-window 1955 Volkswagen Microbus. Hammer price was an eye-watering €190,000, or $235,000 - within a few percent of sticker on a Lamborghini Huracan.

I'm sure the collector's heirs (if any) are very pleased about this...

To be honest, I thought this was incomprehensibly ridiculous (or maybe ridiculously incomprehensible) until you mentioned it was cheaper than the arguably uninteresting Huracan. Still hundreds of things I'd get before this at that price, but I'd have more fun with this than the cars that children drool over and child-brained trust fundees buy.

/shotsfired

But kidding aside, what in the actual fuck was someone thinking when they paid enough to free 10 Nigerian princes to buy that? Maybe it was a Nigerian prince charity auction car.

Was just a reasonable modern reference point. There's scads of other hardware that I'd go for before either of those, too, but that kind of sets it at a certain height.

I'm not even sure what I'd get for just under $250K. Too much "collector" stuff is fearsomely overvalued right now (as we see here) and a lot of what I really want is way more down to earth.

Ugh. If I had that much to blow on any vehicle a damn Hippy Bus would not even be close to being on the list.

Really, I'd never spend more than what my first house cost on any car or truck.

I completely understand, just kidding around. It's a perfect reference point to show the absurdity of the price. I don't even think about what I'd buy for that much, but I can tell you for sure that it'd be lots of "normal" cars. Anyone should have have quite a collection for that much money IMO.

The collector market will probably crash at some time in the near future, if this is any indication.

Agreed 100%. It's like when people started paying unfathomable sums of money for your run-of-the-mill 'Cuda and the values tanked. I really want for the 911 "bubble" to pop and snatch up an SC or 3.2...

By the way, I forgot to mention that there's a DC-area Opponaut email list (surprisingly there are about 50 of us), so let me know if you'd like to be on there. It's just for meetups, maybe a couple a year.

It's been bubbling for a while now, especially this last year or so, and is due (maybe overdue, in certain cases) for a massive correction.

Or that's what I keep saying and hoping. No idea how long this can sustain or how big the reset will be.

I think we've reached a peak for price of collector car market. It will not stay as high as today. (That's my opinion)
